Battle between Sheriff Clarke, Milwaukee Co. hits new heights

MILWAUKEE CO. — The budget battle between Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke and County Executive Chris Abele hits new heights.

27 sheriff’s deputies were supposed to lose their jobs under the new county budget. But Sheriff Clarke refused to lay them off as part of the 2012 budget.

On Friday, a Milwaukee County judge decided to put this case off for a week — and therefore, the deputies will remain on the payroll.

The question being argued in court Friday — what power does the sheriff possess? The county says the sheriff is going beyond his constitutional rights by keeping the deputies on the payroll. The sheriff’s lawyers say Clarke has a duty to protect the community regardless of the cost.

The judge did rule Sheriff Clarke does not have unlimited power — the county does have the right to lay off deputies.

Two more doctors cited for writing fake sick notes

MADISON (AP) — The Madison School District has released additional sick notes given to Capitol protesters last year which show two more doctors provided the excuses the district deemed to be fraudulent.

Fifteen doctors who signed the notes have not faced sanctions from the state Medical Examining Board. The notes were written after hundreds of teachers called in sick last February, closing schools for four days. School district officials required the absent employees to provide notes documenting a doctor visit. The district docked pay from employees who didn’t have a legitimate excuse.

The protests erupted after Gov. Scott Walker proposed cutting collective bargaining rights for most state workers.

The State Journal says a committee of the board plans to decide next month whether to investigate additional doctors.

Woman charged in 91st, Capitol crash to undergo mental eval.

WEST ALLIS — A West Allis woman charged in a crash that killed her friend will undergo a mental evaluation. Sierra Pugh is charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, and Thursday in court, Pugh’s lawyer asked the judge for a mental evaluation to determine Pugh’s competency to stand trial.

Pugh appeared in court Thursday, and waived her preliminary hearing.

West Allis police say Pugh lost control of her vehicle and hit a tree near 91st and Capitol earlier this month. Her passenger, 34-year-old Patricia Wnuk died at the scene.

Police say the women were going home after drinking at a bar.

GAB gets 30 day extension to process Walker recall signatures

The Government Accountability Board has been granted an extra 30 days to process Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch recall signatures

The GAB asked for at least 60 or more days to complete its official review. The GAB hopes it can finish scanning recall petitions for both Governor Walker and Lt. Governor Kleefisch, and turn them over to Walker's attorneys by January 27th.

Once the GAB finishes scanning the petitions, it must then verify the signatures for "correctness and completeness" before they are made available to the public.

Governor Walker and Lt. Governor Kleefisch will get 30 days to challenge recall signatures. Republican state senators are also being given a 20 day extension for challenging recall signatures.
